Previous | Home | NextA few sketches survive of the appearance of the Old College, most done at the time of construction of the New College to retain memory of the old images.. This sketch in 1789 is of "Principal Robertson's house [left] with the guard-hall and Teviot Chambers [center, right]." "Chambers" were devoted to "study" (classrooms and living quarters for students); text descriptions suggest that the Teviot Chambers consisted of a row of buildings continuing beyond the indications of this sketch. William Robertson (1721-1793), Principal of the College 1762-1793, actively promoted the library, the Faculty of Arts, and the Faculty of Medicine. "Teviot" is taken from Andrew Rutherford, Earl of Teviot (?-1664). The location was in the south part of the quadrangle; the view is apparently south.
